Mud Announcements

Date Announcement
18 August 2005

Sigh.

Mud will go back under the knife tonight. I haven't looked at it yet, so I don't know what the problem is. Hopefully I will have some info for you tomorrow or this weekend.

27 June 2005

THE SYSTEM IS DOWN

Sadly, the board will be down for an extended period of time. The board crashed sometime Thursday night. Unfortunately due to the age of some of the components of the system it is going to take me a few days to get it back up and running. Fear not, we do have backups from the previous night before the crash, so no data should be lost (I hope), but it may be up to a week until I can get it back up and running.

I will keep you updated here. Sorry for the problems!

24 June 2005

Mud appears to have crashed sometime on 23 June. I am working on restoring a backup. IF you manage to log in and notice that your account went poof, please hold off on contacting me. I hope to have it back up and running shortly. Sorry for the inconvenience. I'll keep you posted here. -Pete

13 May 2005

I just want to take a moment to make everyone aware that the greatest movie ever to be released on DVD is now available for purchase: BBS: The Documentary is now shipping for the ultra low price of $50.00 plug S+H. This shit is old school. Check it out for a good idea of where everything we take for granted came from.

I had the pleasure of perusing this DVD over the weekend. It is quite, quite, quite long, so I didn't get to watch the whole thing yet, but what I saw brought back a flood of memories. The pre-TDH days, the hours spent ceaselessly re-dialing, the $300+ phone bill and the subsequent punishment of being grounded from using the computer. Spending my first paycheck ($200ish) on a 14.4 modem, the endless nights of mud and subsequently failing my first period French class for two straight semesters...

If any of this rings a bell to you, go buy the DVD. It's well worth it. And no, TDH is not mentioned, and no I am not making any money off this.

14 April 2005

I just wanted to make some people aware that I have moved. Some people on TDH have my home address. It has changed. I have also removed my home address from this website. In the future please e-mail me if you need my address for any reason. Thanks for playing. -Pete

15 February 2005

TDH is tentatively back up and running!

The installation of MajorMud 1.11O took a while, but was otherwise uneventful.

This is just a tentative post. Everything seems to be running OK, but there is a bit of lag which I'm looking into. The real test will be to see how it handles over the next day or two, particularly during cleanup.

In the meantime, feel free to check out the release notes. Let me know how the system is faring over the next day or two. If you don't see me active in the game, shoot me an email at mud@tdh.com and let me know what's up.

Thanks for playing! Enjoy the new updates. -Pete

14 February 2005

MUD is in the process of being upgraded. It is tentatively scheduled to go back online on Monday night, February 14th.

This is just a real quick post to let you know what's up. I will give more details soon.

Thanks for playing!

21 January 2005

Happy New Year!

To get things started off on the right foot, I plan to upgrade Mud to version 1.11o. My target date for installation and upgrade is Sunday, February 13th.

TDH is currently running Mud 1.11i. For a complete list of updates in 1.11j - 1.11o, please check out the release notes.

If you have any questions or comments regarding the decision to upgrade, please feel free to email me at kowgod@kowgod.com.

Also, please note that upgrading mud does not affect the version of Worldgroup, or the number of incoming lines the board has. Those will hopefully come later...

UPDATE: Fear not! This upgrade will NOT cause a Mud reset.

9 August 2004

MUD IS BACK UP!

Our new T1 has been installed and mud is up and running.

If you have any questions or concerns, drop me an e-mail.

3 August 2004

So, obviously, MUD is down. Specifically, the T1 connection MUD ran on is down. Our service provider, Norvergence, went bankrupt and abruptly cut off our connection. I promptly signed a new contract with TDS Metrocom for a new T1, but it will be 3-4 weeks before service is connected. In the interim, I am looking at a hosting facility to host mud. I will know more about this option later in the week. I am sorry about the lack of communication. Our T1 carried both data AND phones for my office. When the T1 went down we also lost phone service, which for a business is very bad news. I have had my hands full putting out fires at work. Now that the business end of things seems to be stable, I am looking into taking care of MUD.

COWs / Patrons: Your COW status will be fully restored upon re-connection. Some of you just very recently donated. Do not worry, ALL COWs will have their accounts credited upon re-connection. If you have any questions, just drop me an e-mail.

Sorry, everyone, for the problems.

28 January 2004 Edit: Regarding the upgrade information below, I *can* do an upgrade for a lot cheaper, but it would require a full reset of mud. Just wanted to clarify that point...

I received the following e-mail today from a player, and I thought I would share his concerns and my response with everyone:

His E-Mail:
pvp have been off so damn long that the newbies have multiplied to the point where it is difficult to do much of anything without spending too much time waiting to get a line. Tdh has always been a pvp board, it was a pvp board when mud was reset, and I am asking on behalf all those who donated a large sum of money to this board to turn things back to the way they were. Turning off pvp breeds newbs, it is as simple as that.

And while I don't necessarily agree with his cynical view of new players, he does raise valid points, which I'm sure many of you are thinking of as well. So...

...here's my reply:
PvP doesn't work with scripting and it doesn't work on boards with unlimited characters per person allowed.

In regards to scripting, it is too easy to just force a character to hang up. You might say this is a good thing, but if the only reason you are using pvp is to free up a line for one of your other characters, than that violates the spirit of the game, and is cheating, in my mind. PvP should be used to get items, test skills, settle bets or kill characters, not hang them up. I will NOT allow pvp to be used just to hang people up. So, if that's the case, then scripting must be prohibited.

In regards to the unlimited characters per player aspect, if I create a fair range of PvP, say 5 levels, then all you have to do is create a character in every level range to PvP with.

So, for PvP to be viable and fair (and fun), either scripting must go or I must limit the number of accounts per person allowed.

Both of these are unreasonably difficult to do. I can't come up with any way to prevent a person from scripting that can't be bypassed, and I can't come up with any reasonable way of checking and authorizing accounts, at least not on a free board.

I am NOT anti-pvp. My only concern is that PvP has to be fair and fun. Any suggestions?

Now, let's switch gears to the money issue. It is almost 100% guaranteed that Met is not going to sell us an upgrade. They say I have to buy a whole new system outright. This is several thousand dollars and is NEVER going to happen. You could send me a check for a couple thousand and I still wouldn't do it.

This basically leaves me with the option of either refunding the money, keeping it and hacking the current board, or coming up with some other alternative which I haven't thought of yet. Any suggestions?

So, let's get this ball rolling. Please let me know what YOU think. This is not a democracy, I don't promise that majority wins or anything like that. I just need to get an idea of what you all think. Now might be a good time to hold off on donating until we have this resolved! Please email me your opinions at kowgod@kowgod.com. Thanks!

10 December 2003 Mud will go down temporarily sometime tonight as the IP address of the machine will be changing. My office is expanding it's internet services, so the Mud will be moved onto a new T1, and will therefore require a new IP address. As DNS takes time to propagate throughout the world, you may experience trouble connecting. Most major DNS servers update within 12 hours of the change, so things should definitely be up and running by tomorrow evening. However, you can try connecting sooner by telnetting directly to the following IP: 65.126.132.126

Do not attempt to telnet to that IP until after the mud goes down, because to maximize uptime I am not going to move the machine until I leave the office, and who knows when that will be :)

Again, everything should be back to normal by tomorrow evening, if not much sooner.

28 October 2003 10:40 AM - Mud is up and running, but it is still in "testing" mode. If things get funky, it may go back down. So, don't get too excited yet...
28 October 2003 10:15 AM - Mud has been fixed. It will be back up and running today. It appears as if there was no data loss. It should be pointed out that there was much more damage than just a burned out power supply. The memory and raid also died. A new power supply and new memory have been installed, and the raid has been rebuilt. More info coming soon. Expect to be able to log back in today!
16 October 2003 Mud appears to have died. It turned off and will not power back up. I think the power supply on the box just died, and I am looking into it as quickly as possible. Stay tuned for more news...
9 June 2003 So an update is definitely due. 1) The upgrades are coming! I have built a new computer on which to run the new system, and have been playing around with the new version of Worldgroup. I have made a copy of our current system and have been muddling my way through the upgrade process. It is proving very difficult to make our old mud play nice with the new system, but I'm getting there. So, stay tuned for that. 2) When I pulled off a copy of the old mud, I don't know what I did, but apparently I turned PvP back on somehow. This was not intentional, and I'm sorry for any surprises this caused. It has been turned back off for the time being. With the new mud WILL come new rules. More on that soon!

Anyways, things are going to be coming along quickly now, hopefully. I apologize if the system is down more frequently now, but it is because I am trying to figure out a way of transferring the old system, etc. I will try to keep you more up to date on whats going on. Thanks for playing, thanks for donating, and please continue to enjoy TDH!

4 May 2003 PvP combat has been DISABLED, at least until I can come up with a better explanation and a better idea of how to bring focus back to the social and fantasy aspects of the game, away from the seemingly personal vendettas that lead to more headaches than PvP is worth. Stay tuned.
28 April 2003 TDH and it's sysops do not condone the practice of "buying" limited items by sending in a donation, and will no longer act to verify that a donation has been received to assure delivery of a limited item. Any money received will either A) be treated strictly as a donation, or B) will be refunded, minus paypal fees! Please do not "buy" and "sell" limited items on TDH with real currency!
17 April 2003 MUD will be down on Friday, 18 April for maintenance aimed at improving system response time and possibly fixing the regen problem. It will go down at approximately 2:00 PM system time, and should be back up by 4:00 PM. Sorry for any inconvenience.
26 February 2003 COW JUST GOT CHEAPER!

Effective Saturday, 1 March 2003, C.O.W. will become... C.O.M? Starting Saturday, a $5 donation will get you CoSysop of the Month for one account! Additional accounts after that are only $2.00 per month! More time as C.O.W. for less money!

Read all about it over at the donations page!

24 February 2003 Last Friday, Mud crashed at approximately 4:00 pm, local time when the hard drive went bad. I have replaced the hard drive, recovered the data and restored the system to cleanup at local time 4:22 AM, Friday morning. Unfortunately, this means that we have lost a little less than 12 hours of game play, but, that is better than losing everything I guess.

Anyhow, lots of people e-mailed me during the downtime. Sorry I was a little busy this weekend since at the same time I had some major network problems at work (which I originally thought were the cause of the problems with Mud). I will begin responding to your e-mails shortly. Thanks! Sorry for the problems. Enjoy.

21 February 2003 Mud crashed this afternoon around 4:00pm. During boot, some modules were unable to load, and about 40 users mysteriously vanished from the system or have been completely reset. Scandisk also shows numerous errors on the hard drive. Because of all of this, I must reset mud back 1 day. Mud has been reset back to 20 February 2003. Sorry for the inconvenience. At least we have nightly backups, right? Anyhow, mud may be down for all or part of Friday night.
20 February 2003 RETRAINING SOMEONE WHO DOES NOT ASK FOR IT is against the rules, and you can be stripped of your cow powers, suspended or deleted if you do it! ONLY retrain people IF THEY ASK! Also, if you need a retrain, don't just gossip "i need a retrain." Ask if any cows are live first, then telepath them directly. Simply gossiping you need a train could lead to you being trained hours later when someone comes back to keys and doesnt realize when you asked. Thanks. Peace.
19 February 2003 If you are looking to donate to TDH via PayPal, and don't have a PayPal account, or have never used PayPal before, please click this link to create your very own PayPal account. By visiting https://www.paypal.com/refer/pal=UY38RCMRVKX5L to set up your new PayPal account, we will get an additional $5.00 referral bonus which will be put towards our goal for donations. What better way to help out TDH? Thanks a lot for your support. Peace.
13 January 2003 My e-mail problems have been fixed for some time now. You can resume e-mailing me at kowgod@kowgod.com. Happy new year!
18 December 2002 I have been having trouble with my e-mail lately. Basically, as of this posting, I am not receiving any e-mail. But at times, one or two messages will eventually come in. Until further notice, if you need to contact me, e-mail my work address: PFuller@qualityhydraulics.com. If you sent an e-mail, and I have not responded, it is probably because I never received it. It has been like this for the past few days, but I just now realized it. Sorry for the inconvenience.
16 December 2002 This is just a reminder about passwords. Please be sure to change your password from time to time. Choose a password that is hard to guess. Try to include non-alphanumeric characters in it, like $'s and ;'s. Stuff like that. Don't share your passwords with anyone, lest they turn on you and you have to deal with the consequences. Keep your accounts safe, and save yourself headaches down the line. Thanks!! Donate!!

MULTI-TELNET PVP IS AGAINST THE RULES!!!

If more than one of your characters, from the same IP address, engages in combat with another player at the same time *OR* if one of your players heals/aids another one of your players who is engaged in PvP combat, it will constitute Multi-telnet PVP, which is against the rules.

By default, megamud will attack anyone who attacks a member of your party. THIS IS MULTI-TELNET PVP! You MUST set megamud NOT TO ENGAGE in multi-telnet PvP. Saying megamud did it is NOT an excuse.

From now on, YOU WILL BE SUSPENDED if you engage in multi-telnet PVP.

ALSO, any player who purposely attacks two members of the same party to force them into multi-telnet PVP WILL BE SUSPENDED AS WELL!!

05 December 2002 Mud is back up. Hopefully the various errors are resolved. Time will tell...
05 December 2002 The Mud will be down for maintenance most of Friday, 6 December 2002. Several issues will hopefully be fixed, such as intermittent lag and regen problems. A complete backup of the system will be made before hand to insure against data loss. Sorry for the inconvenience. Check back here for an announcement when it comes back up.
25 November 2002 Apparently people are ignoring certain rules on tdh. Namely, multi-telnet PvP is prohibited. If you multi-telnet PvP you will be suspended or worse!

And saying that your megamud set the person as an enemy IS NOT an excuse. If you can't learn how to control Megamud, DON'T USE IT.

You have all been warned. More rules at here!

22 November 2002 Become a COW! CoSysop of the Week, that is... In an attempt to raise money to make future improvements to TDH, we will begin taking donations! In exchange for your completely voluntary support, you will receive C.O.W. status! Click here for all the details.
13 November 2002 As of now, alignment changes will no longer be given out by sysops or mudops. If you want to become evil, you can engage in PvP or attack townspeople, or whatever you want... and if you want to become neutral/good again, well, time will take care of that! Sorry, but these are the breaks. Too many people complaining!
12 November 2002 Many mudders are reporting that the system is down because they cannot log in and get "Connection Refused" errors when trying to connect. This actually means that the board is full, not down. For some reason the system no longer gives the correct error message when full. Sorry for the inconvenience.
11 November 2002 In an attempt to fix the regen problem, MUD has been reset back 20 hours to the 10 November 2002 cleanup save. Sorry for the inconvenience.
7 November 2002 As any of our current players know, the BBS is becoming full on a regular basis now, thus forcing lockouts and making it hard to log back in. This obviously makes it difficult to do boss runs, or get any substantial, consistent exp'ing done.

TDH has looked into the costs involved in adding 32 more incoming lines to the BBS (resulting in 74, up from the current 42). However, it is not cheap. $548.05, to be exact.

Some would like to see the PvP level increased, feeling that this would lead to less afk scripting, and thus more free nodes. Others would like TDH to begin taking donations so that money can be raised to purchase the additional lines. While still others would like to see the rules changed to only allow 2 or 3 characters per person online at one time.

I am taking all of these suggestions, plus others, into consideration. I ask that you, the Mudders, also think about these, and please email Kowgod@Kowgod.com with any comments, questions or further suggestions as to how to fix these problems.

Thanks.
